Weekly Reflection, Week Six
October Ninth 2017 marked the beginning of my sixth week interning. I have noticed that teaching is a lot of repetition with a slight change in lesson plan periodically. I intern three days at a time and all three of my days are spent teaching the same lessons. I do not mind it because by the third day I know what to expect. I am finding out I really do not like the personal learning teaching technique Ms. Shaw is trying out this year. This teaching technique allows students to chose whatever they want to create. This is an excellent way to keep art exciting. However, I am seeing a lot of unfinished projects and projects taking longer than needed. Perhaps elementary students are not ready for this form of freedom.

In Chapter Four of Holler If You Hear Me by Gregory Michie, the author describes how some of the other veteran teachers in his education classes expressed their views on the disconnect between education theory and classroom reality. One such example of this disconnect is the theory of differentiated instruction. I have learned a lot about differentiated instruction in my Foundations Block classes this semester, since I had not previously heard of the concept. In theory, this practice is a great way to tailor instruction to each student’s individual needs, as well as encourage learning and exploration.…

Introduction: Today’s classroom is filled with an array students whom each have individual strengths and limits. It is our responsibility as teachers to not only identify and celebrate their strengths, but to determine their areas of limitation so that we can aid in building up these areas. In the following case, Joe is a 2nd grader who attends a Title 1 tutor class while attending an elementary magnet school. As the tutor class begins while Joe’s reading class is still in session his teacher is collaborating with this tutor to find ways to adjust the assignments so that Joe can meet the nine week goals his teach has set.…

Like so many, I felt an undeniable call to action after watching Davis Guggenheim’s film Waiting for Superman. The film poignantly illustrates the imperative need for a long overdue paradigm shift in American education. In the film, activist, educator and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada, shares the disillusionment he felt as a child upon realizing that Superman was not coming to save him from the perils of his impoverished South Bronx neighborhood. His message in the film is that we must become our own superheroes.…

Assignment 4 In Jean Anyon ’s essay “From Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” she focuses on many schools whose curriculum have been carved out by social class. The lower the students families social class is the more repetitive and simple their curriculum will be, while on the other hand, the higher the social class is the more thought goes into the students coursework. Anyons basic point is that the work children are told and expected to do in school is the work that they will continue to do in their future jobs and careers. People, most often, do what they are taught to do.…

    Short Term 12 Reflection

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

From a very young age we are told that we must go to school to become intelligent and functioning members of society; but how effective is the current education system? Erica Goldson gave her high school valedictorian speech on that very same topic in which she condemned the public education system. The American education system ought to value creativity and individual uniqueness over receiving high grades and scores. Every student is unique which is why it is such an important problem that schools attempt to teach students much in the same way.…

    What Is My Pdp Goal

Before my three week block, one of my PDP goal was to improve my classroom management and time management. For first two weeks, I have been working on these two areas because I did not feel confident in managing the classroom without my co-op teacher there in the kindergarten room. I learned that when I was planning my lesson, I had to think about what time I am teaching and how they are going to respond to my lesson. Since my kindergarten class had strict routine, for first few days, I did not get their full attention because my lesson occurred during their centre time. Throughout my lesson, they would ask when they are going to have centre time, and did not put much effort into their task was one of the things I had to think about as I was…

Respected child psychologist John Stamos was once quoted as saying,”Putting yourself into something is the only way to achieve your goals, those who recite useless information will stand by and let life go by them.” I agree with Stamos. He is saying that if one is willing to put themselves into something long term the result will be much better. A person who puts their all into their long term goal in this case a project much more will result from that than simply putting information in short term memory and taking a test. Websters School of Facts recently took a survey of all schools using the long term project form of teaching and found that these school’s students have a seventy five percent higher retention rating than normal schools.…

This system bottlenecks the learning process where students are not learning things that interest them in an interesting way because teachers are not given the freedom to teach how and what they teach. It also creates a situation where the arts are not appreciated and people who may excel in the arts are cast off as failures. For these reasons, many believe these old models are more harmful than helpful.…

Education would not exist without teachers, nor would students gain knowledge without effective teachers. But what makes a good teacher? A good teacher is someone who motivates their students to do the best they can, and to be independent thinkers. A student who is an independent thinker not only acknowledges the teachers lessons, but finds additional information outside of class. Independent thinkers are defined as people who change the way they think, and question authorities.…

The grow your skills and to gain a better understanding of yourself as a teacher, reflection is essential. Reflection allows teachers, to look back at lessons, weeks, terms or even years and view what went right and what went wrong thus allowing teachers to start to think critically about what is best for them moving forward. “For very young children, making art -- or just talking about it- provides opportunities to learn words for colors, shapes, and actions” (Lynch). It is vital for a child to learn the importance of art early in their life so that they can choose whether or not they will be dedicated to pursue a career involving art skills. Learning about these basic forms of art at an early age gives children more insight in preparation for their educational life. “Although some may regard art education as a luxury, simple creative activities are some of the building blocks of child development” (Lynch). Students involved in simple creative activities within their peers can affect their emotional status and gives a more comforting feeling being around others that have similar qualities of enjoyment.…
