A personal experience of overcoming
Though my personal mission statement feels as if it was written forever ago, I still have the same ideas in mind that I believe can connect directly to our class text, Becoming a Learner by Matthew L. Sanders. Sanders puts emphasis on why we go to college, what to do in college, work and finding purpose in education. My first and foremost goal in my mission statement was wealth and/or financial security. I want to be able to provide for myself and others comfortably.…
Marian Helped Guide Katelyn Gochenour to Empower Herself and Others By Mia Mixan Katelyn Gochenour started her journey at Marian with an hour long drive to school from Logan, Iowa. Every day for four years, she drove two hours round-trip just to go to school. Many people would wonder why in the world is any school worth that sacrifice.…

The Path to a Higher Education “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world” (Malcolm X). In both Frederick Douglass’ article “Learning to Read” and in Malcolm X’s article “A Homemade Education” they discuss the challenges and obstacles that they had to overcome. Frederick Douglass was a man that was born in the horrors of slavery and later became a famous abolitionist speaker in the north. Malcolm X may not have been a man born into slavery, but he was still treated poorly because of his race. X later became a well-known leader during the Civil Rights Movement.…
Life in my house was at times an adventure and at other times a misadventure. Deep in the throes of a misadventure and while pregnant with my youngest brother Zach, my mother was unwittingly poisoned. Unfortunately, Zach was born with several physical and intellectual disabilities causing severe obstacles in school. I was giving the opportunity to play teacher in real life and tutor him. It made such a positive impact on both of our lives, I knew I had found my calling.…
It has been three years since I read the book “The Magic” by Rhonda Byrne. It says you will attract what you desire and be grateful for the blessings. It’s a 30-day count blessing and teach the person to be consistent. Since then my journal is packed with daily gratitude. However, it doesn’t mean my life is perfect.…
This I believe. ” This means that even through hardships he still believed in himself and nothing in life will ever stop him from becoming the greatest in the world.…
“Lee Bui!” her professor hollered into the microphone, signifying Lee to receive her degree. She stood up with pride and carefully held onto her black graduation cap. As she walked down the Husky Stadium, all eyes were on her. Her family, her friends, and her professors were all gleaming with excitement.…
My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…
At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…
“How has your Christian spiritual journey influenced your professional and/or academic experience?” While I grew up in a God loving home, I did not grow up going to church every Sunday. Nevertheless, I have come to realize that it was through my faith in him and realizing that we all have a purpose on this Earth that has influenced by academic and professional experiences. Being the first person in my family to attend college and graduate with a degree, it was particularly difficult monetarily for my parents to send me to college; however, my parents knew that it was in God’s plan for me to pursue a postsecondary education.…
A Thanksgiving Gratitude List The holidays are fast approaching. In stores and on TV we are about to be inundated with visions of festive family get togethers, lovely gourmet meals and lots and lots of good cheer. And while the holidays can be a beautiful time to unwind, recharge and relax, for many of us, it can be overwhelming and downright exhausting. Especially for us artists.…
I Believe In Appreciation I believe in appreciation. When I was a child, my mother often told me to appreciate what I had in my life, as she consistently tells me now. Over the course of several years, I started to understand why she told me to so as a result of experiences and tragedies inhibiting the world around me. Those single moments, single experiences, have led me to realize how blessed I was to have what I had in life also taught me the preciousness of life.…
Life is interesting and full of surprises, with new people to meet and new places to go. Life is also mysterious and puzzling. Living life for fifteen years, there are several things that I am thankful for. I am thankful for the positive and the negative in my life. It makes my life interesting and worth living.…
Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
