What Does The Veil Symbolize In The Scarlet Letter

Right away, the sexton noticed that Mr. Hooper had a black veil on his face.
Everything on his face was covered except his mouth and chin, I think this was because his smile and words are important to the mood of the story.
The people begin to believe that Mr. Hooper had committed a sin and was using the veil to hide from God. Hawthorne had done something like this in The Scarlet Letter when Hester had to wear the “A”.
“Yet perhaps the pale-faced congregation was almost of fearful a sight to the minister, as his black veil to them.” (2) Showed us that the congregation was afraid of the veil, but Mr. Hooper was also afraid of how they would react to him wearing the veil.
Ironically his first sermon was about secret sins, and mysteries we hide

Young Goodman Brown
It jumped out to me that his wife’s name is Faith, and it said he shares a parting kiss with his wife. On this night he is parting from not only his wife Faith, but also his faith in others and God.
As we saw in The Scarlet Letter, the forest is a place of evil and it is where the devil resides.
When Goody Cloyse is seen walking towards them on the path, Goodman Brown jumps off the path and into the woods. This surprised me because earlier he said he was afraid that there were evil indians behind every tree.
I think that at this point Goodman was so worried that he would be seen with the devil, that he didn’t care about the evil things in the forest.
The pink ribbon falling stood out to me as being very important. It resembled Faith’s innocence being lost, but it also resembled Goodman losing faith in his whole community.
Did Goody Cloyse go an get Faith and bring her in front of the altar with Goodman or did she wander there herself?
Goodman Brown finds himself leaning against a rock, in a calm place compared to the burning trees and roaring wind. Does this mean that he successfully resisted the

This gave the congregation a feeling of guilt. also in lines 14-16 it also states that Mr. Hooper wears the veil to exemplify his lamentation for the hidden sins of many puritans who dread the critical retributions for impropriety’s and live as hypocrites which becomes evident in the denouement of Hawthorne’s narrative. To conclude Mr. Hooper is dealing with his own transgression which is why he doesn’t want anyone to see his countenance. He feels culpable for whatever he has…

The people of Milford feel as though Reverend Hooper can see into their conscious because of his veil and that he knows their secrets and sins; perhaps this ability for a pastor is not entirely bad and if Mr. Hooper can use it appropriately, this understanding he will have of the townspeople will strengthen their relationship with him and God. Mr. Hooper might wear the veil because he is trying to protect the people of his church from the sin he has committed. If they cannot see his face and expressions then his sin will not scar them and he can hide behind his guilt. It is understandable to why people would fear the veil because it proves that Reverend Hooper is comfortable with his sin, which is something people try extremely hard to conceal. As a leader who leads by example, people will be more likely to trust their religion if they can use Mr. Hooper as a test.…

In the Minister’s Black Veil Mr. Hooper wears a black veil for the rest of his life and the whole community shuns him for this little difference. On his deathbed he says “tremble also at each other! Have men avoided me, and women shown no pity, and children screamed and fled, only for my black veil?” (Hawthorne “Minister’s Black Veil” 307). The Puritans start to shun Mr. Hooper and treat him badly as soon as he puts on the black veil.…

In “Young Goodman Brown,” the woods symbolize the dark secrets within the forest. These secrets influence his mental state forever, causing him to feel isolated from his wife and community. This is displayed when the narrator says, “‘There is no good on earth; and sin is but name. Come, devil, for thee is the world given” (Hawthorne 104). The narrator implied how the woods are where Goodman Brown learns about the dark truth about nature, but it turns out he could not handle the truth because after he sees the true nature of people Mr. Brown loses his faith and trust in the woods.…

His loss of faith is explored when he returns to town. Upon seeing Goody Cloyse catechizing a girl, he “snatches away the child as from the grasp of the fiend himself.” Goodman Brown’s actions towards Goody imply his loss of faith in religious figures and piety towards God. Although Goodman Brown attempts to continue his life previous to the night in the forest, it is clear that he could no longer trust anyone but himself, not even Faith: “Often, awaking suddenly at midnight, he shrank from the bosom of Faith.” This suggests that his wife represents his remaining faith in religion, but even that is suppressed by his apprehension of the evil that exist inside everyone but himself.…

In the story, “The Minister’s Black Veil” Mr. Hooper, the preacher, is preparing to go give his Sunday sermon like any other Sunday. However, this Sunday is just a tiny bit different; he has a black veil covering his face. This veil caused commotion throughout the whole church and some people even left because they were uncomfortable with him having the veil over his face. It also caused the congregation to be shocked about his appearance, which leads them to questioning why he has the veil on and what is the purpose of it. Mr. Hooper is just trying to get across that “... The Earth, too, had on her Black Veil” (Hawthorne 240).…

He makes sure no one comes near him or any of the people he encountered in the woods, which causes psychological suffering due to his paranoia. Young Goodman Brown is a very well written short story whose journey unfolds in 1835. As the reader travels the Shadows of a dark sinful and unforgiving forest with the main character, Young Goodman, he explores his identity and its relation to the good pureness of his beliefs and of the cold truths of sin and human nature. The key Theme that strikes me in the story is good versus evil which is represented in the form of heaven, Faith and belief of Christ and the Devil himself and the effects of the lure of sin on Goodman’s Faith and Will to stray away from evil and how, ultimately his innocence is lost in the end. I enjoyed this short story particularly for its use of imagery which is used to unfold abundant use of symbolism and relate the theme of good versus evil along the way.…

The forest that Goodman Brown travels through on his errand can be seen as life and its dangers. The staff resembles a serpent that can be seen as a symbol of an evil being or demon. Faith can symbolize Goodman Brown’s religious faith. And lastly, Faith’s pink ribbons can display Faith as a symbol of purity and innocence.…

Evil is understood as the force in nature that oversees and provides a rise to wickedness. Evil is a very difficult subject that many consider displeasing, however, evidence from the stories, “ Young Goodman Brown,”,“ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” shows that evil does exist; and has existed since the beginning of time. By reading these three stories the themes of Good vs Evil, “Young Goodman Brown,” greed and gluttony in, “ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and moral decay in, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” become quite apparent. If all these themes are put together, it shows that there is great evil in each and every human heart. In the tale, “ Young Goodman Brown,” Brown is representing the common man who is struggling in the fight good against evil, which he portrays by venturing into the forest in the dead of night ( the forest generally representing wickedness), and discovering things that are suddenly shown or understood in reality that all must eventually face— that there is sin within the world and nobody is perfect.…

Reverend Mr. Hooper wears a black veil, but the reason behind is not clear right away in “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hooper is significantly feared because of his use of the black veil.…
