In the book, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a woman named Hester Prynne was punished for having an affair with Dimmesdale, the minister. She had to be publicly shamed and wear a red 'A'. Hester and Dimmesdale have a daughter together named Pearl. Hester learns to embrace her letter and Pearl becomes well-behaved. Dimmesdale admits to the affair and feels relieved to know that he doesn’t have to carry that weight around any longer. Hawthorne used symbols such as the scarlet letter, the rose, and Pearl to show there's good in every bad situation.
