What Does The Pearl Symbolize

Shakespeare once said, “Expectation is the root of all heartache.” In the novel, “The Pearl”, Kino always expected something after he found “THE GREAT PEARL” he thought nothing could stop him from what he wanted and nothing could go wrong with his plans. When you think about what Shakespeare stated “expectation is the root of heartache” it brings to your mind that when you have high expectations for something it can go the opposite way than the way you want it to go. Every time that Kino had a plan he expected a lot from the outcome but in reality it just gave him heartache and troubles after he found his “GREAT PEARL”. This pearl he found brought him great troubles that you would never seem to believe could be real.

When it comes to the dealers on of the dealers doesn’t want nothing to deal with the pearl and he didn’t want to make an offer on the pearl. Also, the doctor feels that the pearl can bring him back to Paris and how luxury it was to him. In the novel on page22, paragraph 1, it states, “And the doctor’s eyes rolled up a little in their fat hammocks and he thought of Paris. He remembered the room he had lived in there as a great and luxurious place…” Also, on page 51 paragraph 4 it states, ““ Don’t include me in the discussion, he said dryly, “I will make no offer at all. I do not want it. This is not a pearl- it is monstrosity.”” This demonstrates that the doctor thought that pearl could bring him back his happiness and the dealer thought how it wouldn’t bring him any good.
