These two things are typically very unrelated and different, but the symbol usually holds a very important lesson. In the book Old Man and the Sea, there are many symbols. One symbol that stood out to me was the mast that the old man carries. This mast is very heavy and he can hardly carry it, but this mast is his life, his life of fishing. This mast symbolizes the sin and burdens we carry throughout our life, and it symbolizes pain we have to go through sometimes because of who we choose to be. It symbolizes that Pearl is different from the other kids because the other kids don’t wear bright clothing like Pearl and the others kids have two legitimate children, unlike her. These bright clothes symbolize the fact that the sin Hester committed can’t be hidden. Another symbol in The Scarlett Letter is the rose bush outside of the prison. This rose bush is right beside a prison and it is something everyone sees when they are entering and exiting the prison. Pearl is a child that was unplanned and her father isn’t her mother’s husband. Even though Pearl was conceived through a sin, she is still a beautiful
