Symbolism can be found all over the short story "Drown". There are many different examples. The narrator has a tendency to always be trying to find a better place, Ysreals mask is a symbol of trying to hide pain or hurt, or even protection. The mask is a symbol of Ysreal trying to cover up his strained relationship with his father or his being away from home.
