It was a real eye opener that we do not even notice that gender makes an impact on socialization. Socialization is the “process through which people are taught to be proficient members of a society. It describes the ways that people come to understand societal norms and expectations, to accept society’s beliefs, and to be aware of societal values.” (Openstax College 100) As children we are taught to like certain things depending on our gender. It first starts by parents teaching their children what and what not to like. Even when being told what chores to do around the house are based on gender; girls would do the cleaning inside to house and where boys are meant to do the outside work like raking leaves. When children get older and are exposed to other things like peer groups, other family, and media they realize that they are expected to act certain ways based on their gender. Females are viewed to play their part in the world and are destined to fulfill duties such as getting married to a male, having children, cooking and doing house chores are all designated to be done by a woman. The male on the other hand are created to be tough, aggressive, and are meant to provide for their families. Social stratification “refers to a society’s categorization of its people into rankings of socioeconomic tiers based on factors like wealth, income, race, education, and power.” (Openstax College 189) Many people in our society are always judging people or degrading people from different social classes depending on different categories such as wealth and education. Where in all reality people are all created equally and all have an equal opportunity at becoming successful. It all depends on what that person wants others to see them as. Social stratification points out the differences in people and in our current generation people all want to be viewed as being successful. Many factors including social media and television expose us to famous and rich people that it clearly downgrades our egos. For instance we see celebrities on the headlines for the most ridiculous and ignorant things but our society has changed so much that we are starting to believe that that is the new norm. People are now trying to change their way of living just to fit in a different social class and it is changing the way our society is
