What Does The Fire Symbolize In Lord Of The Flies

In William Golding's novel The Lord of the flies, he shows many examples through symbolism of the power and evil that is within everyone, even the most innocent. Golding uses symbolism in the utmost way, by using it for almost every word; he makes the book so easily understood by many people. There are numerous amounts of little symbols for everything that happens in the book but the major symbols are the signal fire, the beast, and the four main boys Simon, Ralph, Jack and Piggy. I have drawn a picture with pieces of the symbols he has explained in his novel. These symbols have huge parts in showing that when humankind is forced to live by society’s rules and expectations, it can bring out the evil within everyone and its ability to dominate our existence.
The first symbol, which is used throughout the book, is the signal fire. The boys start the fire on the mountain to attract nearby ships to their rescue. The fact that the boys continue to maintain the fire shows that they want to be saved and return to society. Golding uses kids with their innocents and the struggle to survive to see which comes through, good or evil, civilization or savagery. The outcome may be drastic but it is realistic. I hope my picture helps bring to light the point he is trying to lay across. With symbolism he created a story that can be translated into the faults within our world and the communities within it. He shows how even the most innocent school boys can turn into savages, just by using the mandates and expectations of society. He is saying that the way we are living will not continue to work. Our world will turn into that island and civilization may turn to savagery. Let us hope for the ship to save
