How Does Technology Influence Our Lives?

It is really hard to detect what has been changed by technology inside our minds because we cannot directly see the mental changes with our eyes. However, the changes brought by technology do exist, both subtle and obvious, and can be exposed by looking into our behaviors in everyday life. So how has technology influenced our thoughts and behaviors, and how should we adjust to the changes? The four articles written by Kevin Kelly, Nicholas Carr, Clive Thompson and Sherry Turkle about the relationship between technology and humans indicate how technology gradually influences our minds and how we normally face these changes. When it comes to the topic of teenagers and social media, most of us will readily agree that social media just create an unreal world on the Internet for teenagers who can easily get addicted. However, is that unreal world actually as bad as most people assume? In the article “No Need to Call”, Turkle demonstrates that the “fantasy” created by social networking services provides shy people a stage to try to be brave, present themselves and make friends (374). People normally consider shy people as passive individuals, so it is natural to see them being alone and not contacting others. But shy people sometimes are just afraid to take the first step to voluntarily make conversations. The Internet and social media provide them an opportunity to express themselves and edit their profiles as they want, even if they are not real (Turkle 374). They can figure out how to make contact with others with preparation and comfort, because face-to-face communication may cause awkwardness. Step by step, shy people can relieve their nervousness with the help from technology because they can practice the skills needed to get along with others through social media (373).
