Yellow is a color that represents “dishonesty, egoism, and betrayal…” (Grok). Tom demonstrates dishonesty and betrayal in the novel, by withholding information about his affair from Daisy. Tom’s egoism is displayed when Nick Carraway states, “Her husband [Tom]...was one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterwards savors of anticlimax” (6). This quote is significant to Tom’s color, because it foreshadows him being increasingly egotistical and bitter as the novel progresses. I would recommend purple for myself because it “suggests intelligence and creativity”, as well as “communicates some degree of vulnerability or insecurity, perhaps a need for approval” (Grok). My intelligence is often shown through straight-A’s and work ethic. I believe these accomplishments set me apart from others my age. I can also be described as congenitally creative, as I have enjoyed acting, writing, and music from a young age. My most recent creative activity has been performing in City Stage Co.’s production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. My subsequent creative goal for this school year is to direct a show for Ashley High School’s One Act Play Festival. Although I feel that I am intelligent and creative, I also struggle with insecurities. I am often times insecure about other’s perceptions of myself from a professional perspective. I feel as though the only way to impress others, is through my work ethic and intelligence. When I make a mistake or do not overachieve, I feel as though I have let down whomever the situation involved. I have also realized that verbal gratification is the best way to cease my insecurities.
