What Does The Bible Say About Holy Days And Customs?

Decent Essays
Christianity is based on the Bible. What does the Bible say about holy days and customs? God warned his people not to learn the way other nations worshiped their pagan gods: "Thou shalt not do to the Lord thy God; for every abomination that the Lord hates, they have done to their gods "(Deuteronomy 12:31).
This reference that bears some resemblance to the modern Christmas tree, in Jeremiah 10: 2-5: "Thus saith the Lord: Learn not the way of the nations, nor the signs of the heavens be afraid, though the nations fear them. For the customs of the people are vanity; because they cut wood from the forest, the work of artificers' hands with a burin. They adorn it with silver and gold; with nails and hammer they affirm it so that it does not move.

The tree house, like Tim, is an enormous symbol as well. It symbolizes the children’s innocence, and how they lose a part of it as the plot progresses. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the tree house is where the children go to play, and it’s worry free for them. Scout provides an example of the children spending their time in the tree house:“Routine contentment was: improving our tree house that rested between giant twin chinaberry trees in the back yard, fussing, running through our list of dramas based on the works of Oliver Optic, Victor Appleton, and Edgar Rice Burroughs” (Lee 8). This is right after Jem and Scout meet Dill and accept Dill to play with them.…

Freedom of religion is certainly a privilege for which we all have to be thankful. Chanukah is the perfect occasion for celebrating this freedom. In the special "Al Hanissim" Prayer that we add on Chanukah to our regular daily prayers and grace after meals we recall what the wicked Hellenist Greeks tried to inflict upon our ancestors. They made an effort to force assimilation upon them by causing them to forget the Torah and to follow this by abandoning their fulfillment of the G-dly commands. We thank G-d for enabling Matityahu, the Kohen gadol, and his courageous sons to lead a small band of faithful Jews to achieve a miraculous victory over superior forces and to thus regain freedom to practice their religion.…

In the First Amendment, it states that we should have “freedom of religion.” About a quarter of the U.S. either believes in god, many gods, science or in no god. Many people believe that “God” should be removed from the pledge because it violates the First Amendment and doesn’t allow them to express themselves and believe in their own religion. This begins controversy because they don’t want to do the Pledge of Allegiance or even listen to the National Anthem. They also believe that if it’s removed then it will not cause controversy and that they can finally have pride in our country without relying on god.…

Our tradition of setting up nativity scenes began with Saint Francis of Assisi and the first creche. In the year 1223 AD, Saint Francis, a deacon, was in the Italian town of Greccio to celebrate Christmas with the Franciscans. However, the Franciscan chapel was deemed too small by Francis and so he would find an area in a rock to construct his own altar and hold the Midnight Mass. There, Saint Francis worked to construct a nativity scene, after receiving clearance from the Pope, such that his construction of the nativity would not be seen as playful.…

We visited the Synagogue on Shabbat to attend a combination of a mitzvah service and a regular Shabbat service. Shabbat is Hebrew for rest and on Saturdays Jews use this day of rest to praise god and reflect on their religion. Jews are forbidden from doing certain things on Shabbat, such as, cooking, driving, handling money, using the phone, turning on lights, and writing letters. As one can see Shabbat is quite restrictive, however, these laws are in place to ensure that Jews show proper reverence and attention to god as well as their religion. This day of rest is the same day as the Catholic church, however, in the Jewish Religion God took the day of rest on Saturday.…

One of the restrictions placed on Jews was " that in their synagogues the Jews, one and all should worship in subdued tones according to their rite,so that the Christians will not hear it". I am completely disagree with this restriction as a reason that everyone one no matter their religion, should worship in any place their god. Everyone is free to worship their god in whatever tone they want to. In the same way that Christians worship their god and praise their god, Jews and any other religion should have the same right. Another restriction placed on Jews was " We have ordained and decreed for us and our heirs that no Jews should have a freehold in any manors, lands, tenements, fees, rents, and holdings by charter, gifts,…
