Theseus and Hippolyta’s love is far deeper than the four lovers’ are, but this real love “matures” with age. Young love has proven to be far more romanticized and less thought out than realistic love. Love is very enjoyable in a midsummer nights dream. It provides a great entertainment. This also ‘numbs’ the effect of unexpected twists, making the story less tragic, and filled with more laughter.
Love is what completes a Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is a major theme in the play. Most decisions and complications in the story are caused by love in some manner. In the play Lysander complains, “Ay me, for aught that I could ever read, Could ever hear by tale or history, the course of true love never did run smooth....” Lysander whispers these words to Hermia when she feels burdened by the obstacles of their love particularly when her father forbids them to marry. The play is a comedy but the exploration of love’s difficulties is actually at the heart of it. Love’s ‘course’ is never smooth. Without this theme nothing would have happened. Hermia ignores Demetrius’ love as she is with Lysander. Because of Helena’s love of Demetrius and Demetrius’ love for Hermia they all eventually get drawn towards the forest. Puck, the fairy upsets ‘loves course’ even more with the aid of a magic juice. This is where the difficulty of maintaining love is depicted.
