What Does Simon Represent In Lord Of The Flies

Every child dreams of exploring a deserted island, yet William Golding’s Lord of the Flies explores the dark reality of such an event. After a plane crash, the only passengers to survive are a group of young British school boys. They wash up on the deserted island with no grownups in sight. Throughout the novel, Golding uses symbolic characters to utilize Societal structure. Firstly, Golding expresses a range of evil and savagery acts that led Jack to represent the Devil. Secondly, throughout the story Ralph demonstrates multiple different ideas that lead him to represent leadership. Lastly, Golding puts Simon in many different scenarios where he is symbolized as Jesus Christ. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good …show more content…
Simon does numerous physical and mental things to result in him to represent Christ. Firstly, Simon demonstrates the story of Adam and Eve from the bible. In the biblical story, Simon represents God, the Littluns represent Adam and Eve and Jack represents the snake. Throughout the story Simon gets fruit for the Littluns. As Jack starts murdering pigs and offering it to the Littluns, the good on the island starts to fade away. This is critical because just like Adam and Eve the Littluns get carried away and eat the meat that represents the poison apple. Simon is always putting others before himself. “Found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands”(Golding pg. ). Secondly, Simon always cares for all the boys and always brings them together. He starts off getting fruit for the Littluns because the other Bigguns did not show any empathy towards them. Next, as Jack knocks off Piggy’s glasses, he quickly goes over to get them for him. He is the one to get the glasses because he is always seeing the truth. Simon even gives Piggy his meat because Jack did not give him any. This is significant because in the bible, one of Jesus’ miracles was creating food from two fish and five loaves to feed over 5,000 people before he ate. Simon tries to preach to the boys about how the Beastie is not real, but just like Jesus, they did not believe that what he is saying is actually the truth. Simon is the one who keeps human advancement going in the middle of Ralph and Jack, which is the fight between good and evil. Both Simon and Jesus are killed by their societies. Once Simon is killed that when every starts to go sour and civilization starts to crash. The way Simon is killed by the spears is much like the way Jesus died. Lastly, even when Simon is dead, he washes out to sea, he is joined by

Simon’s actions, thoughts, and dialogue parallel Jesus in a multitude of ways. To begin, Simon’s behaviors connect him to being both a prophet and a Jesus figure. Simon cares for Piggy and the littluns, and, in fact, he “shoved a piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy” and in doing so enrages Jack (Golding 74). Simon, sensitive to the needs of others, generously helps Piggy after he is denied meat. In addition to aiding Piggy, Simon looks out for the…

All Simon did was good, the novel never showed Simon as evil. “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless outstretched hands.” (56). Brian Joseph Professor Harmon English 9-2 23 November 2017 Bad Happens to the Well-Intentioned Lord of The Flies embodies many themes, but none is so special as the one that related to me the most. In the 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies, author William Golding uses symbolism, dialogue, irony, and foreshadowing to illuminate the gloomy truth that people who have good intentions and follow what they believe to be right, especially when unpopular, will be misunderstood, misjudged, and sadly, punished. Ralph, Piggy, and Simon fall under the category of “well-intentioned people.”…

Furthermore, Simon is regarded with some suspicion among the group because he often disappears without anyone knowing where he is. He has a secret hiding spot from which he spies on the other boys. Specifically, he watches Jack and the hunters kill and behead a pig. The text states, “All at once they [the hunters] were running away… toward the open beach. Simon stayed where he was, a small brown image, concealed by the leaves,” (137).…

Left Arm By “shoving his piece of meat” to Piggy, Simon showed the good side of human nature (Golding 74). Despite his good deed, he “lowered his head in shame” because he embarrassed himself in front of the entire group and thus made himself more of an outcast to them (74). Glared by Jack, Simon provoked the inner beast’s “inexpressible frustration” by living by his own morals.…

He shows natural goodness when it comes to others, for instance helping the younger boys pick fruit, sharing his portion of meat with piggy, and post Jack 's quarrel with Piggy, runs to recover Piggy 's glasses when they get knocked off his face (Golding 71). Simon seems to be one of the only characters who doesn’t have a gradual progression into savagery. Although noticed as strange by the others, this makes him an outcast like Piggy, (Gulbin 88) Simon is mature, insightful, and wise for he understands the "Beast" more than anyone. While being wise might seem as though Simon could be immune to the islands effects, natural problems still take toll on him.…

Perhaps the best example that can be given to prove Simon is a Christ-figure is through his actions seen in the novel. Some of Simon’s smallest and simplest actions add up and relate to simple actions done by Jesus. It is known that Jesus was always very good with children. There are many pictures of him being surrounded by children and helping them. When Simon walks pass the little ones struggling to reach for berries, he does not even think twice before stopping and helping them gather food for the others: “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reached . . .…

These are all signs of civilization and sticking to their morals, as opposed to Jack’s primal nature in the later parts of the book.
