Service is important to me because it allows for growth in a person’s selflessness like no other action can. In this country, it is extremely easy for a person to turn a blind I to suffering and need, which is unacceptable. A few years ago I adopted the mentality that my actions and achievements are not for myself but for the betterment of the community around me. With that being said, it’s important to me to give back and assist the community in as many ways at possible. Service creates the perfect avenue of benefit someone else’s life in a potentially significant manner without expecting anything in return.

I would love to work at schools in Waco, the VA hospital, or assisted living homes to connect with people through lively conversation.
Building lasting impressions on a community is extremely hard to do in a general and impersonal setting. I would love to try and interact with the same individuals and build a lasting and positive relationship which extends through them into the rest of the community.

Service to others has played a big part of my high school career. I am an instructor for a middle school indoor winterline group and I am specifically in charge of the colorguard members and their work. When I am with the group, I help instruct and show these young students the correct way to do dance, colorguard, and performance. By teaching them, it has lead me to develop my own skills, like communication, leadership, and my own dance and colorguard skills. Also, another reason service is important in my life is because of the relationships I gain.…

Service is something I’d like more opportunities for. It makes me happy whenever I can help someone else. I’ve had many experiences with service in my life, including times where I’d go to Bailey Place, a senior center and interact with those there, or when I’m helping my parents by taking care of my sister for them. Whatever it may be, as long as I’m helping I don’t need a reward, the true reward is the happiness you get when you make someone’s day by being there for…

In that moment of kindness, you may not think that your small gesture or the work you are doing for someone could have an impact on someone’s life or even the world. Throughout the text, The Work by Wes Moore, the idea of work has a much bigger meaning that states having a life that matters is important. He believes that living a life full of meaning, purpose, and service are the keys that allow you to become part of a bigger picture.…

Often, when I think of acts of service, I envision a group of teenagers headed to go ‘help out those who do not have as much as we do.’ Richard Foster’s article, “The Discipline of Service” is packed with an exploration of what true servitude is. Foster’s article takes our sterile, one-week trip idea of servitude, and demands the reader to think of a daily sacrificial servitude as a the true Biblical model of servitude. In reading this article, there are three main points that I would like to highlight: serving as a means to grow in humility, choosing to be a servant, and serving as a daily, sacrificial lifestyle. Cutting straight to the heart of service, Foster states that “nothing disciplines the inordinate desires of the flesh like service, and nothing transforms the desires of the flesh like serving in hiddenness” (130).…

Why do people want to attend a service academy? Is it because of a title, or honor, or does it have to do with the idea to prove themselves? These are all questions that race through the head of people who hear about people wanting to attend a service academy. Not only is it a competitive field to apply and get accepted, but if accepted to a service academy a person will be academically, physically, and mentally challenged. If I was asked four years ago, I would have told a person that I didn’t even know about a service academy.…

As mentioned in the article posted by UM, faculty benefit personally and professionally from integrating service into their courses by encouraging interactive teaching methods, which add new insight to discussion in the classroom (Benefits of Service-Learning). By doing so, teachers are able to promote students to apply themselves more, and become more active learners. In my service learning, I was able to have that hands-on experience. This helped provide an opportunity for myself to become more creative and become an active learner. In some classes, applying myself to learn was difficult, but through service-learning assignments, I gained new knowledge.…
