Everyone has friends that they talk to almost all the time and they go and see each other sometimes everyday but this can't always happen. There are friends that could live hours away from you that you talk to daily but you can never see. That doesn't mean that the friendship is any less from anyone else's, it just means that there are some issues. All of my really good friends that I consider family live nine or more hours away and it can be difficult sometimes. My friends from other states talk to me almost all the time. We try to talk at least once a day, even if it's just a small text message. There are a lot of days where we’ll watch movies together and days where all we do is roleplay while texting. We started off as strangers maybe seeing each other in a few different chats or inviting each other to different ones. After awhile we would exchange skypes and talk when we could. Not to long after that, we started texting and calling each other. Everyone starts out as strangers but it never has to stay that way. One of my really good internet friends, Oliver, calls me almost every day and we can talk for hours. We will talk about the people in our lives or just strangers. Sometimes we'll even talk about certain scenarios for our ships like ‘what if they met at school?’ We ended up talking so often he met my family and I’ve met a lot of his. These questions come at a very interesting time for be in my UT development – I both met my host teacher today, and I have been working in Gilmor elementary (where I have been placed) during the summer placement. The conversation with my host teacher was pretty neutral. The setting of the meeting was not altogether the greatest. I was in the unair-conditioned cafeteria eating lunch with my students when I was introduced (AMBUSHED) by the site coordinator to my host teacher for the year. The conversation was actually pretty short, and included a pretty neutral interaction – it was neither overly positive or overly negative.…

My grandfather lives within the midwestern region of the United States, rarely having conversations with him. However, when we talk, I enjoy the time I spend talking to him. The issue of distance resulting in poor relationships is also disproved by the growing network of social media. My father had been deployed in Kuwait and social media allowed for us to have conversations. With social media, great distances become meaningless.…

Even though this is what a friend really boils down to, some people argue that the barrier of a computer screen makes these online connections fake or even impossible. A large majority of friendships formed between people who know each other in person have been translated and maintained in online spaces like Facebook and texting. There is no reason to say that friendships formed entirely online with no physical contact cannot be just a real and important to some people. Online friends send each other messages throughout the day, organize Skype calls with each other to chat face to face, and play games together. They do all of this while being states away or sometimes countries away.…

Now that I attend the University of California, Riverside while she stayed back home at California State University, Los Angeles. We had to find a way to adjust learning about each other in a different place, now that we are fifty miles apart and have completely different schedules we had to adjust to our new places to learn about one another. Whenever we do get to see each other it would be a place out of the ordinary, therefore both our comfort zones with one another has changed.…

They become a distant memory and so do I. Many of my peers, I know them, their names even but outside a classroom setting maybe we smile and wave but there is not a core foundation of friendship. Distance relationships, even those tied by blood, can be difficult to maintain and cultivate (Bangerter & Waldron, 2014). Before the internet proliferated into our everyday lives, the family communicated mostly through letters and the occasional phone call. These communication methods were few and far between. Even now with Facebook, Skype, etc., the family barely communicates. This is one unwritten guideline; it is ok this way, but if one calls or messages the other, it is as if they have had no break in communication.…

For the first major assignment for Professor Julia Green’s Communication 211 for Spring 2016, I partnered with classmates Lori Rainey and Sarah Beattie to “analyze how the different forms of communication yield different results when it comes to communicating” (Green, Week 4 - Major Assignment 1: Blog). By going through the exercises, I have reconfirmed that the form of online communication best suited to me is email versus social media such as Facebook, or texting. Unlike some people, I find texts are more difficult to respond to for many reasons, including the limitation of the touch-screen keypads, as well as the synchronicity of the communication, depending on the user’s attention to their phone. As an example, I routinely forget my cell…

Multiple-Role Relationships Psychologists often find themselves in relationships that service more than one purpose. This can cause conflict and potentially be unethical, so psychologists need to be aware of the rules for multiple-role relationships and go about them in a ethical way.
