My religion, gender, education and family have all had an enormous impact on me and have shaped me into the person I am today. There were many obstacles I faced as I was growing up and they have had a huge influence on me. We all face different life experiences, and this is what makes every single person different from others.

My religion represents who I am the most because it has influenced my identity in society. Religion is important to me and my family; we value it the most. Both of my parents came from a Pentecostal family, where they weren't able to participate in certain activities; such as getting piercings, being in a boyfriend or girlfriend relationship, have an abortion or even wear certain clothing. When my parents first came to America they did not know how to speak English, even today both parents aren't fluent in English. My first language was Russian, I did not know how to speak English until my second grade in elementary. English was difficult for me to learn, throughout my elementary school experience I was put in the ELD class, where I was given the opportunity to develop my English skills to succeed in school. Since English was not my primary language, it took time for me to better understand English and I would have to say English was a hard language to learn. Being bilingual is something I am proud of, I can speak two languages now fluently. There were many times where I had to translate for my parents, like at school meetings or even at doctor appointments. Some people would even tell my parents that they have lived in America for almost eleven years now and still don't know how to speak. First of all it wasn't easy for them to learn English considering they came from a different country, as for someone who was raised in America and went to school where they learned how to speak English in school. I am not embarrassed of speaking another language or translating for those who need it the most. I am proud to be bilingual, even if society views us as the lower
