‘Religion’ is a volatile word with an almost subjective meaning. The problem with attempting to define ‘Religion’ is that how can a single word be used to cover so many different types of cultures and means of prayer, worship and rituals? It is, however, useful as a word to describe the type of thing we are aiming to examine, without specifying what it really is. There have been many different attempts at defining religion and these come from a range of philosophical and anthropological fields such as cultural relativism, absolutism and reductionism.…

A definition? Definitions are all different. The Anthropological definition is often refuted, but illustrates that it is, “a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic,” according to Charles Joseph Adams in The Encyclopedia Britannica. Religion seems to be the conception on how we were created, and what will happen after one dies. This follows through with the most popular religions: Christianity, Catholicism, Mormon, and Muslim.…

In my life, my Faith is absolutely crucial. Now I do not read the Bible as much as I should so don’t let me fool anyone, but going to Church and my own studies have taught me a couple things. One of the biggest values that I have learned is to be humble. James 4:10 states, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” This teaching has changed me and it has become difficult to exalt myself.…

It is an old age question that seems utterly inexplicable: what is religion? Although this question infinitely varies depending on the person, one often feels very strongly on this subject. Whether an Atheist, Buddhist, Jew, Hindu, Mormon, or Christian, there is much to be said on beliefs and how one goes about living life strictly based on those vary beliefs. My beliefs, however, do not urge me to answer the question regarding what a religion in itself is, but rather what justifies religion. There is so much that goes into religion that it is difficult to come up with a definite conclusion given that the entire idea of religion is subjective.…
