What Does Magis Means

Improved Essays
Magis is one of Fairfield’s core Jesuit values. Although, by definition, magis means “more,” sometimes the best way to spread the spirit is through small gestures. For example, smiling, holding the door for others, reaching for a box of cereal for someone from the top shelf, or being patient in a long line; and saying please and thank you. Through the years, I have learned that the spirit is showing love to everyone no matter the circumstances. To me, magis means being your best self. On a day-to-day basis as a student athlete I have to have balance and set goals; two things I excel in. First, I set goals on a daily basis. As a member of the Cross Country Team, I set personal goals in times I want to reach and as a team we collaborate on the …show more content…
In addition to being a student athlete, I am a Christian. It is my duty as a Christian to care for others. One ongoing problem that we can all try to alleviate is the unjust treatment non-white citizens receive on a daily basis. While I come from a very diverse town, I have the privilege to be friends with many non-white people. From these friendships, I have learned that they do not share the same benefits I do simply because of my white skin tone. When my friends are mistreated it becomes a personal problem, not one that I read about in the news. As Christians it is our job to stick up for others who are mistreated and by the power of the people, we can change the culture of America and laws that create prejudice towards non-white people. Changing the culture starts with you and me, saying, “hey, that’s not okay.” Some people don’t know that their actions are inappropriate so racial and social education is crucial. I have stood up for my friends in the past and I want to do more for my friends and fellow citizens. One way I can do more is by spreading awareness and knowledge. A great place to start on campus is through the Racial Justice for Social Justice Club; this club has the potential to create a culture of acceptance and understanding. During my years as a stag, as I try to be my best self, I intend on bringing these issues that are important to me to the

Life in the United States as a minority can be extremely challenging and discouraging at times, but Jackie Robinson set a hopeful example to many people that the color barrier could be broken as the first African American to play for the Dodgers in a major league sport. Throughout my life I have been faced with odds that have not been in my favor, and with casual racism, but I have prevailed in a similar smaller scale. I attend a small high school of five hundred thirty seven students, and eighty percent of the student body is Caucasian. Sometimes, the race comments are unavoidable no matter how hard I try to shield myself from them. There is always one individual who thinks it is okay to ask me how I “crossed the border.”…

    Black Student Athletes

Institutions are recruiting athletes that aren’t mentally prepared for the hardship of college academics. Athletes who are recruited only think on a small scale which is the fact they can continue to play the sport they love and not the actual role of an athlete being a student first. Although, the NCAA and its member institutions tout the collective success and personal development of student-athletes, there is evidence that Black male student-athletes persistently face challenges, limiting their ability to achieve academic and personal success (Baker & Hawkins, 2016). As one glaring example of the potential impact of social support on the matriculation and experience of Black student-athletes, it is also necessary to acknowledge that social…

When people are categorized as superior or inferior because of their skin tone it can become problematic. For example, in 1954 multiple states had laws to secure the divide between whites and blacks. They attended different schools, churches, and restrooms. Whites were seen as superior and were the first priority while blacks were poorly treated and uncared for. The different treatment of both races created tension.…

Throughout history African Americans have fought for racial equality through many means; a major one being sports. Through their success in athletics, African Americans have made incremental steps towards achieving this collective goal, but due to their dependence on white-controlled establishments, have been confined to parameters of attainable power and social mobility. It was through successful black athletes like Muhammad Ali that spoke on the behalf of African Americans on injustices that paved the way in breaking those parameters and gain black power. The activism that created change by those black leaders has faded away in today’s black athletes, largely in response to the emulation of the greatest athlete of the 20th century, Michael Jordan. Revered globally as a hero and a “God”, with millions of followers wanting to be like Mike, Jordan’s influence influenced black athletes to be racially and politically neutral and strive toward individual success no matter the cost.…

Fitness and Goal Setting Knowledge Fitness and goal setting have been the main topic of conversation in this class. Whether we need to work on legs or arms today, or what we are going to do in the future. I learned that it is better to do quantity over quality when it comes to fitness workouts, and that it is always important to stretch and warm up your muscles before a workout to ensure you do not strain any muscles. For goal setting, I learned that if you pick a specific goal that you wish to achieve, like say to reach +10 in the fitness flexibility test, you can keep working towards that goal step by step, or in this case number by number, to reach your goals efficiently. When reaching towards a goal, you cannot just make it in one try…
