A Barrister is a type of lawyer or a specialist advocate, or trial lawyer. Barristers also provide legal advice and opinions on complex areas of law. The role of the barrister is focused generally on court proceedings but barristers often appear as advocates in arbitration and statutory tribunals.
To become a Barrister, you must pass exams set by the Kings Inns. You must be called to the Bar after you have passed and then complete a year of apprenticeship for other senior Barristers. There are both Junior and Senior Barristers. Junior Barristers usually spend approximately 12 years as a Junior Barrister before being able to become a Senior Barrister which they must apply for and can only be awarded by Government.
