What does it mean to be a woman in 2015? The world we live in is both exhilarating and intimidating at the same time. Years ago, there were not the demands on women such as expectations to be superwoman and do it all with aplomb. Today we have choices—lots of choices—but not all of those choices are straightforward or uncomplicated. With all the phenomenal scientific breakthroughs regarding genetic testing, we are put in the challenging situation of having to wrestle with moral dilemmas regarding our unborn children and our personal bodies. Just because it has been made possible by scientific innovations, is it always the right choice?
As seems to be the norm with new developments in scientific testing, attached is going to most likely be a staggering price tag. As well, we are meddling with the personal and unique DNA fingerprint of a human being. The flip side of the coin is the implication of being able to diagnose thousands of mutated genes of an unborn child in the mother’s womb. Just imagine with possibility of preventing the heartbreak of parents having a child being born with Trisomy 18—not to mention staggering medical expenses.
