I feel that as an individualistic society, we tend to discount the value of older persons and look at them as having a less meaningful position in our working place. It is fairly obvious that many Americans feel that their job defines who they are, when someone is unable to work due to old age, it grants that person a certain loss of status. When someone is unable to work, even if they have a fine retirement fund put aside they now have little to no income, which results in a lower socioeconomic status as well. When we discredit someone’s life we make them feel inferior and the sense of inferiority can result in depression.
