When Lincoln states that the American nation was “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” his assertion is partially true. During Thomas Jefferson’s time when he first coined the statement that “all men are created equal,” it only concerned the people who were primarily involved in decision making for the nation: men (or land owning men to be more precise). Women, slaves, and even Indians did not participate in government, and served more of a supporting role in the nation. Due to their lower roles, they were deemed as unimportant. Thus, when both Jefferson and Lincoln address that “men are created equal,” that statement was correct because “men” were found to be on equal footing.
