What Does It Mean To Be Privileged

Throughout life we as people seem to judge or look down upon those who have more than us. Somewhere along the line, we forget that they did not wake up as successful people. That there were certain steps they took in order to achieve their lifestyle. We become angry at the fact that they have more than us or that we don’t have the ability to sit back and relax. One may consider these well established people to be “privileged.” For me, to be privileged means to acquire more than those around you and to be granted opportunities that others have not. Privileged can be viewed from an economic, racial and academic standpoint.

From them moment a child enters school they are taught that education is the key to success, however not every child is granted the opportunity to go to the school that would provide them with the most rigorous curriculum in order to challenge their minds. Children live in rich neighborhoods are granted better opportunities. Not because they are smart but ultimately because they had better resources. Most schools in low income areas don’t have enough books or supplies. This makes it very difficult for teachers to educate and students to learn. If a student is not provided with the proper materials to learn then this cause them to be challenged academically. Giving the more financially stable students the advantage of moving at a faster pace and acquiring more knowledge. From the moment a child enters school they are taught that education is the key to success. However how can they obtain the key if they are not given challenging educational instruction. The word privilege can be seen in many different ways depending on where you are from. It is important to understand that their are many different areas of being privileged.
