What Does It Mean To Be Free Essay

Think about the freedoms you experience in your daily life. Are those freedoms permanent? Can they be taken away? In my opinion, freedoms are never permanent. They must be won repeatedly. There will always be someone that wants to take freedoms away. This means that you will always be fighting to keep your freedoms, or even to gain them back. This pattern of gaining and losing freedoms can even be seen in normal households. Suppose a child draws on the walls. As a punishment, the parent may ground the child, or restrict them from having markers or crayons. The child, with the goal of shortening the grounding, starts to do things that they normally wouldn’t. They clean their room, help with the dishes, and follow their parents rules to a tee. On the second day of grounding, the parent ends the punishment, and the child has won back their freedom. This is just one example of winning freedoms in the home. You may think of independent countries, or countries that are being kept from independence. You may think of wars that you’ve seen on the news. You may think of the military. All of these things have to do with freedom. Some countries have fought or are fighting for freedom from other countries. Some people are fighting wars to gain their rights. Some people need to win these rights repeatedly. If we look back into our own history, we can see an example of this. At the time of Martin Luther King Jr., black people had very restricted rights, especially in the south. After years of protest and campaigning, black people won equal rights. However, there are still people with a prejudice against black people and other people of color. This means that people of color still aren’t being treated equally, and they are still fighting for equality. This proves that people can’t gain permanent freedom, and must fight for it time and time
