What Does It Mean To Be An Adult Today

Age of Responsibility The question that most people ask themselves is at what age is someone an adult? The answer that most people give is at the age of 18. In my opinion, i think a person should be an adult when they are mature enough to act like an adult. When teenagers turn eighteen they automatically think that they are adults. I would consider them adults, when they know how to make the right decisions in their life, and they are capable of having their own family and providing for them. Although, they are supposed to be the ones that will have to consider themselves adults. In the article “What Does it Mean to be an Adult Today?”, they tell us that the change to adulthood is defined by five milestones. Those five milestones are: Completing school, leaving home, becoming financially independent, marrying, and last but not least having a child. In this article, they provide several reasons, of when a teenager now becoming an adult, should actually be considered an adult. I will be explaining what the real age should be when someone is an adult, and also when a teenager now adult should consider themselves and look at themselves as an adult. In the article “What Does it Mean to be an Adult Today?”, they tell us that …show more content…
Also, that they reach the five milestones. That they are mature enough to be able to provide for a family, and that they have a stable job. Just because they turn 18 years old, they are an adult now, first we all have to complete the five milestones in order to consider ourselves as adults. There is no rush to become an adult, it might be a long process but it's worth it. Why? Because if we consider ourselves adults when we still aren't, then people are going to expect a lot from us, that are adult responsibilities, or adult things, and what are we going to do? We simply won't be able to do some of those things they expect from us

Imagine a world where actions have no consequences, where chaos flourishes, and base desires rule decisions. One can be considered a young person when they have not reached maturity. Maturity plays a big role in decision making, as your thoughts require to be thought out. Factors include the result of your settlement or following the proper policies that carry out your action. There are many different opinions on the age of responsibility and adulthood. In Alan Greenblatts article, “What is the Age of Responsibility?”, he discusses how people often think 18 is too young to be considered an adult but yet there are many contradictions against the claim. With so many factos influencing what people think maturaity means, people should be considered adults at 18 because that is when teens start experiencing adult things and start making real life decisons. The age of maturity should be measured not by age but by the persons life experiences. Robert Epstein, a psychologist, completed a study with, “... More than 30,000 people showing that 30% of American teens are more competent than the median adults in a variety of ways”.…

By the time they turn 21, they have at least 3 more years of experience and maturity. Adulthood doesn't happen over night for most teens, and sometimes it may even take longer than 3 years. Kids need more years to be able to adjust to the idea of being an adult and making adult decisions. My next point is that kids are not fully developed untill about their…

Adults have had parents and they have had time to learn. Therefore kids have not realized what they have done is wrong and should be committed by anyone, including themselves. They need to learn and understand this when they turn about sixteen, or hopefully younger. When they get sixteen they are too old to be acting out like that. I also think that they don’t need to when they are younger than sixteen because they are just learning about life.…

Adults but not adults at the age of 18 How are we adults, if we’re not seen as adults? In the United States, the age of adulthood is 18. At the same time, people are restricted from being able to consume alcohol, in a responsible way. If we are declared adults at 18 we should have the right to decide if we drink or not. The minimum legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 because 18 is the age of adulthood in the United States, you can do everything in the world but you're prohibited to drink, and less laws will be broken because people will be more responsible while making wise choices.…

Many parents of today's teenagers were legally allowed to drink at the age of eighteen. Today's teenagers face more responsibility and are treated much differently from the way their parents were treated. If twenty-one is considered so mature, then why is eighteen considered an adult? At the age of eighteen, an individual can vote, serve on a jury, stay out without a curfew, leave home, drive, smoke, buy weapons, engage in financial contracts, fornicate, start a family, be sent to adult prison, join the army, and die for this country. If an eighteen year-old can be held to so many responsibilities, then it seems unfair to say that they are not old enough to drink.…

Alana Picard Mr. Santaella Enc 1101 31 August 2017 Society Changes Robin Henig who wrote “What is it About 20-Somethings?” argues that the twenties are a developmental stage for humans that comes before adulthood. She states that to be an adult, a person must have a degree, be married with children, be financially independent, and have moved out. While in 1960 that may have been the case, in 2017 it is not. The economy is nothing like it was in the 60’s, lifestyles have also changed significantly since then and for a person to move out of their parents house these days is nearly impossible until they have a stable and well paying job. Robin says that “reaching adulthood is happening later than ever” (Henig) which I, personally disagree with.…

In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…

However, if a person was considered an adult at the age of 21, it would be understandable because many people at the age of 21 are more likely to be mature. A person should be considered an adult at the age of 21 because by that age they are wiser, have less peer pressure, and are more responsible, on the other hand, someone people, despite their age, are responsible.…
