What Does It Mean To Be An Educated Person

Improved Essays
Education is the fundamental building block of every young person in America. Receiving an education is considered to be one of the most important elements an individual can acquire. From the time a person reaches the age of five until the age of eighteen, he or she is required to attend school daily. Throughout all of history, countless individuals have claimed to be educated. Thus raising the question, what does it really mean to be an educated person? In my humble opinion, being educated does not necessarily come from a person who has a 4.0 GPA, acceptance into an Ivy League school, or even outstanding marks on homogeneous tests. Furthermore, I do not believe that to be educated means an individual obtains a certain amount of knowledge. Education is not a tangible object that can be measured. An individual is simply educated or not. To be educated is having the ability to listen to others, be able to think analytically, and consider the opinions of others. …show more content…
For example, to be able to express an opinion on a specific matter, an individual must first be well-informed on the subject. It is difficult to express an opinion on matters that are fundamentally foreign to an individual. Having the ability to listen to information being said is one of the best ways an individual can become better educated. If a person has trouble listening to the information being taught, especially in school, then more than likely he or she has trouble securing knowledge. To be educated, an individual must have a thorough understanding of the subject in which he or she has specialized

What does a student need to become well educated? Educational author Alfie Kohn offers a common belief. Written in his article “What Does it Mean to be Well Educated,” Kohn believes a student’s educational success can never be truly measured; since education differs by location, culture, educators, and monetary resources, defining the characteristics of a well-educated student becomes complex. However, Kohn explains the only reputable characteristic of a well-educated student “is to have the desire as well as the means to make sure that learning never ends,” (Kohn 4). Although Kohn believes a positive education can never be defined, the battle to define the successes of education continues to rack the minds of educators and parents alike; both worrying their students will fall behind.…

Today's society revolves around getting an education whether it is going to college, a technical school, or a vocational school. Having accomplished a higher discipline emanates a false sense of the meaning of being educated. An individual who takes the time to consider different points of view and does not jump when the 'experts' say jump without any thought could be considered, under the standpoint of Northup Frye and Edmund Pellegrino, to be educated and a good citizen who contribute to their community. An informed citizen and a responsible citizen come hand in hand for the most part, but there are people who have been 'educated' and have leeched onto the fictitious idea that everything they believe is wholeheartedly correct disregarding everything else.…

I was taught that education was an opportunity. Education could make me have a life better than my parents lived or that we were provided. Money was not a factor in your intelligence. A good education could get me out of the situation I was living in, one with no financial stability. Hard work led to good grades; good grades led to a good college; and a good college led to a good job.…

What is a good education? What constitutes a good education? Education is defined as the act or process of acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. While there are many ways to obtain an education and a variety of subjects that can be studied, to have a good education one must learn how to think. Simone Weil and David Foster Wallace prove this in their essays on education and its importance in life.…

I believe the author of this quote is trying to point out that having an educated mind gives one the ability to question one's thoughts. Or he may also be trying to express that having an educated mind gives you the ability to play around with someone's thoughts and opinions without accepting them, because you've already set your mind to what you think is already correct. For example, my friends and I are pretty good when it comes to math and science. We love to argue about things that are going on in the world, such as the recent school shooting to the current presidential election.…

“What Does it Mean to Be Well-Educated,” an article from Principal Leadership on March 2003 by Alfie Kohn. He argues that our education system can improve but first our mindset must change on what it means to be educated. He uses his wife as an example her Alma Mater is Harvard University, an IV university, she is a highly intelligent physician but had poor grammar and very poor mathematical skills. First, he asks that we understand the purpose of an education. His view is that education is supposed to help us be better people.…

How would you define someone who is well-educated? Would you base your definition and judgement based off of the school a person went to, or the highest level of degree in which they received? Is a person smart and intelligent because of the grades they received on assignments? Or would you base a person’s smartness off of their ability to memorize facts and relay them to you? In the past I have gotten straight A’s and numerous academic awards.…

Since the first day of class, we have been discussing what it means to be an educated person and what qualifies you to be one. There are so many answers to that question and everyone will have a different point of view about it. An educated person can be anyone who just graduated high school, a doctorate student, or even a college dropout; the possibilities are endless and there is not one straight forward definition of what an educated person is. To me an educated person is a person who is engaged in the world, open to accepting new thoughts and ideas, and is willing to learn from past and future experiences as well as educational opportunities.…

To define true education, one must start by looking at the careers and likely livelihoods of the students being educated. Students need to be prepared for the events in life that would benefit them as a whole, not just core curriculum. Not to say core curriculum isn’t important, because it’s very crucial that the basics of math, literature, and science are taught to everyone. On average a student is individually different than his/her peers, and are expected to learn the exact same way. Although some may believe that America is doing good graduating students with knowledge that should help them succeed, in reality students are unprepared in almost every way since they are taught under the same guidelines and standards.…

By this definition, one might argue that being educated means that you are trained or specialized to do only one thing. I believe as well as many others I have talked to about this subject that an education constitutes far more than just being trained or specialized to do one thing. I do not believe you can confine education to a single definition from a dictionary. I will be the first to admit that certain majors or degrees will set you up to be one-dimensional and specialized for one thing.…
