What Does It Mean To Be A Tactile Learner?

Improved Essays
My parents have always challenged me to strive to do my best since I was a child. From pushing me to learn how to ride a bike at age five, to striving me to achieve a higher ACT score to attend the college I love, I learned how to become very independent and credible. As I approached my high school years, I changed mentally by creating a positive mindset after my freshman year. As to this day, getting a 3.11-grade point average has affected me in both positive and negative ways.

One characteristic that I figured out about myself is that I am a person who learns from mistakes due to the fact that I am a tactile learner. I can picture my fifteen-year-old self, sitting in the yellow painted classroom on the second floor of Magnificat High School playing Slither.io on my laptop rather than be taking notes for the exam I would have in a few days. Twirling my curly hair and waiting for the clock to reach 3:15 p.m. on a Friday so I can rush out of the classroom to get ready for a party that evening. I had such a bad character, I was extremely careless and was only concerned about my social status, partying, and boys.

In fact, I had an AP Government presentation due in Spring of 2014. The presentation was worth 25% of our final grade and I decided to finish my slides last minute. I remembered sitting in my grey room, stressing out with a blushed face hoping to reach the deadline at 11:59 p.m. When I received my grade, I was not happy at all. This was the turning point for me and I finally came to a realization that I needed to focus on my school work and apply the knowledge and study skills that I was

Summary: In the article “Brainology”, Dweck talk about two types of attitudes or mindsets. The two types are a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Students with a growth mindset tended to get up again from setbacks and continuously improve academically with added effort, while those with a fixed mindset had a mindset that their abilities is what they are stuck with, they are afraid to further challenge themselves; due to belief that they aren't capable. Dweck had concluded that praising one without any acknowledgement of effort tended to create a fixed mindset while those praised for hard work or effort were more likely to not only feel more confident but still kept trying even if a task was a challenge, making these qualities a growth mindset,…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

Since I was eight, my parents have been waking me up at four a.m. to work at our family’s business, Chuck’s Donuts. At the time, I saw this as a pain, a chore, something I would rather not do. I was always grumpy and annoyed in the morning, especially when asked to help serve customers or wash tables. My parents constantly scolded me because of my bad attitude, talking back, giving off an aura of nonchalance, or acting like I owned the place.…

My mother gave birth to me as she looked at the planet Venus, she said my birth was easy and I came into this world as the only girl she would ever have. Growing up with five brothers was anything but easy, it was a constant challenge of trying to prove my worth. There was no one to turn to or relate to and my mom worked all day, so I spent most of my childhood independently, never really relying on anyone but myself. By the 6th grade, my competitive spirit and independence translated to mathematics. I felt a great sensation every time it was announced that I got the highest score on the math test.…

Accepting another individual's input as a fact. Anchoring Heuristic can be a have a negative effect on my decision of which college to pick. For example, there was a college in Texas Huston-Tillotson University, a historically (predominantly) black college, my mother disagreed with me going there because of a bad reputation it had. Instead she gave me a suggestion of going to St. John’s University, saying it has a better reputation and it is close to home.…

Have you noticed that many freshmen college students have a hard time adjusting to college classes? Do you know the reason for it? Well, it is because most high school teachers only teach their students enough in order to graduate. So, adjusting to actually studying and putting much effort on the work is harder for college students, especially since college classes are much harder and work at a much faster pace. One way teachers can grab the attention of students, is by "revealing the trump card of failure (Sherry pg.713).…

Growing up I never really had a problem when it came to learning. It did not matter what the subject was, I always found a way to learn it. You know at that time of my life, caring about ‘how’ I learned was of no care to me just as long as I received no less than high B as my grade. I recently taken a self-assessment to see what my primary learning style is and the results were unsurprising. At 30% auditory, 35% visual, and 35% for tactile, the self-assessment reveals that I am a Visual/Tactile learner.…

Throughout my 7th and 8th grade at William O’ Darby Junior High I tried, but I did not try hard enough, I knew I had potential, but I did not put all the potential I had into the work I did. I tended to wait for the last minute to do all the work I had in order to complete it on time. I could not really focus in classes because I did not have all the motivation and grit I needed to do something with my life in the long run. There were times where I would not do my homework and think it would be okay as long as I did the next assignment. I kept my grades at an okay level just to keep my family off my back.…

The change between the beginning of high school and the end of high school occurs for everybody, but it truly amazes me how the person I am today contrasts so much from the person I was at the beginning of high school or even the beginning of the semester. Despite the stereotypicality of changing in highschool, I believe I possess something that most students do not, self-realization. This self-realization serves as the fuel for my desire for self-improvement. This self-realization is different than most because I believe I can see my negative qualities and my positive qualities. I, in turn, can then utilize my positive qualities to improve my negative qualities.…

While taking the self-assessment I already knew what my strongest points were, but I confirmed that that I’m excellent at accepting personal responsibility, discovering self-motivation, adopting lifelong learning, and believing in myself. I scored higher in these areas because I’m all about the future, bettering myself, learning, and goals. I take anything that I do seriously from school, work, personal life and everything else in between. With that being said I am on who takes responsibility for what I do rather it’s good or bad.
