I am from a particularly conservative family. My grandmother always enforced the idea that men are superior to women. By the time I was 10, I knew how to cook, clean, and even sew, so that one day, I would be the perfect wife. I was encouraged to wear dresses and keep my hair long. I will always remember the day that my grandmother told me that if a man ever told me that the sky was purple, I should agree with him even though I know that the sky is blue. Neither can the use of dresses, high heels, or makeup. I believe that the definition of what it means to be female is constantly changing, even today. I live in a society where my prom king showed up in red lipsticks, high heels and he could “twerk” better than half the dance team. It is the same society that accepts Angelina Jolie, even after her breasts were removed. And finally, it is the society that accepts a woman’s choice to have children or not. So although my grandmother may question my short hair, tattoos and piercings, promiscuity and inability to have children, I do not. I am a female. What makes someone female varies, but overall, I believe that it comes from the inside. What makes me female is that I believe that I am a female; therefore I choose to be
