What does having an education mean? Does it determine your worth or value in life? Do some people even deserve to have an education? Not according to Adrienne Rich because she believes that you need to claim an education. You need to take it and grapple with it and that is the way you will be successful in life. This is especially true for women because they will be second to men because they are seen as not capable to do the job. Women need to claim their education so that they can live that good life with a good job and not have any worries in the world. But, everyone needs to claim an education to be as successful as they can be. There are some step you have to take to claim an education. So what exactly is claiming an education? Claiming an education is taking one instead of just receiving one. To Rich, you are not in school to “receive” an education, but you are there to “claim” one. The difference between receiving and claiming is that claiming is “to take as the rightful owner” and receiving is “to come into possession of.” “The difference is that between acting and being acted-upon, and for women it can literally mean the difference between life and death. (P. 608).” This statement alone is the greatest point as to what the whole speech is about. Women are really the main group of people who need to claim an education because women typically make less money than men so they need to get a good education so that they can get a good job.
