In this assignment, we were asked to interview three individuals on their view as to what money and happiness means to them. I began my interview process with a young woman, Stephanie, a Colombian 20 year old, who was born and raised in the United States. Stephanie explained that to her, money is something that can be lost or gained. It provides her with the food that’s placed in front of her and a roof over her head. All things in which an individual needs to survive in this day in age. To Stephanie happiness is something that someone seeks. Whether it is through people you meet, a song you hear on the radio, or even social events such as a party or even a day at the beach with a group of friends. In the eyes of Gigi, she feels that money is not something you need in order to be happy; conversely, money does make life circumstances less challenging and worry free. She gave an example of a celebrity and the abundant amount of money that they come in contact with on a daily basis. Despite the fact that they are financially secure in ways some couldn’t even imagine, they remain genuinely unhappy. She feels that they remain unhappy because happiness comes from things that money can not buy; things such as family and the feeling of an individual’s fulfillment. Having access to such a large amount of money can make an individual worry more than the average person. At some point, they gain so much power that they don’t know what to do with it, to the point where it causes them more stress than anything else. It occupies the necessities and then some, but will everything that money can buy you bring you true happiness? Money is not everything; it can bring you the necessities you need in order to live, but not always the necessities to bring you happiness. Happiness is something that comes from within, someone who lives in a shack like the Indian man in the Happy video can be just as happy if not happier as someone who lives in a $500,000 home in the middle of LA. I genuinely believe that the more money someone has, the more problems they will encounter. I found myself the happiest with things that money cannot buy me. The love of my family, bring me endless joy and laughter, the ocean gives me a sense of tranquility and freedom, the park or lighthouses provide me with a sense of peace and quietness that brings me to my center. These things are simple and something that nature itself provides me with, it’s completely free. Money solves many issues that is true, but it can also create them. If money is the sole purpose of your happiness, then I believe you are not truly happy. You are simply temporarily happy with the materials of your choosing.
