The visual elements of art help us break down an artist’s work and aids us get a deeper understanding of what the artist is trying to accomplish. In the book; Living with Art, by Mark Getlein, he defines the visual elements as “They are the elements that we perceive and respond to when we look at a work’s form” (Getlein, 2012, 77). Analysis of what the visual elements are, according to Getlein will help tell us a better understanding of Olafur Eliasson work. Getlein talks about seven key visual elements; lines, shape, light, color, texture and pattern, space, time and motion. The use of these elements lets you experience and feel the world differently. He uses light and color to give you a different perspective. An example is the piece; Your Rainbow Panorama. When you walk around the glass walkway, you look out on Arhus, Denmark and you see the city in different colors. Depending on the time of day and if the sun is out, the light form the sun (or lack there off) can give you a different experience. The Weather Project and Little Sun are just a few pieces where light has a big impact on the experience. The use of both, light and color, also gives his pieces a sense of space and perspective. By making his pieces in geometric shapes, it accentuates the lines and by doing so, it creates a great deal of direction and movement. Most of his designs are done on a huge scale and they are very interactive. He wants people to experience his art together.
