What Does Fairness Mean In To Kill A Mockingbird

Decent Essays
Some character traits of Atticus are that he believes in equality for all men and he does not give up easily. He knows that if he does not defend Tom Robinson he would not be able to “hold up [his] head in town…”, “…represent [the] county in the legislature…”, or even simply “…tell [Scout] or Jem not to do something again.” Simply put, if he does not defend Tom Robinson he would not be able to respect himself. He knows that this man needs all the help he can get to be acquitted of the charges brought against him, and he knows that it will be hard enough for Robinson to get a fair trial because of the color of his skin, but Atticus believes that fairness is a necessity to all especially in court. Everybody expects for him to be the one to do

Atticus sets a good example to Scout and Jem because he believes everyone is equal and; therefore, Tom Robinson is black, it doesn't mean he can't defend him. For example, Atticus tells Scout many times that if he didn't defend Tom Robinson he wouldn't tell Jem or Scout not to do something. He has to set a good example for his children and if he expects them to do something or follow certain values, then he must display them first. In the book Atticus says, "The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” This quote proves that whatever Scout or Jem believe in they have to stand up for it.…

One thing that Atticus does not realize, however is that the defense Atticus made to the jury was enough to make the all-male, all-white jury stop and think about whether or not Tom was guilty (Michalos 20). In many of the cases against black men juries would immediately declare them guilty. In this case Atticus urged them to judge Tom on his character, rather than his skin color. Although the jurors’ prejudices were too strong to give Tom justice, Atticus did make them think before they proved him guilty. Tom Robinson was eventually killed and Atticus was furious.…

"Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That 's what I don 't like about it." This exemplifies how the town resented Atticus for simply doing what he believe to be the right thing to do; which is why even though Atticus had no intention of influencing the town’s idea of justice for Tom Robinson, he influenced the white community, who just so happen to have been the ones to decide Tom’s fate. This once again proves that while unintentional a single individual how the power to alter or change what another person perceives as…

Just because someone 's skin colour is different than someone else 's does not mean they are worth any less or are inferior to another race in anyway. This is similar to Tom being convicted and being considered guilty. "I ain 't ever seen any jury decide in favour of a coloured man over a white man. "(chapter 21) This shows the reader that the verdict the jury gave was based solely on the fact that Tom Robinson is black and not based on the evidence Atticus provided to prove that he is innocent.…
