Courage is powerful and can be simple. Courage does not have to involve saving lives or jumping from 12,000 feet from the sky. Fear often restrains us from doing something we love or even just as simple as happiness. Courage allows us to see beyond our capabilities and allows us to connect with others despite our differences. The image I chose shows a woman who had suffered an acid attack, in a runway for the New York Fashion Show. This image conveys that courage allows individuals to change society’s beliefs on appearances, and encourages individuals to be content with themselves despite the opinions of others. More so than others. I hated it when other people talked about me. I always felt like I should have a good impression on others. This mentality lead me to ruin the way I perceived myself. I was constantly thinking of how others thought of me that I let them dictate how I should live. I dressed the way they wanted me to, I talked the way they wanted me to, and I acted the way they wanted me to. I had no idea what I was doing at that time. I cared so much about my appearance that I didn’t realize I was already distancing myself from my friends. When I realized how my way of thinking has impacted my life, I took a step back and reflected on my actions. Why was it so hard to be myself? The cause of it all was fear. When I realized this, I knew I had to get rid of it, but overcoming your fear is difficult, so instead I used courage. Courage requires fear, and so I mustered up the courage to be myself which eventually lead me to losing a few of my friends, but it also lead me to be content with myself. If I continued being the way I used to be I know I would have never felt happy with myself as I am now. In many aspects of our lives, courage plays a significant role.
