In this book there's a girl named Eliza who has to move with her mother when her mother's new boyfriend, Burl, gets going with his band. We first see her complaining about the issue to the janitor of the apartment that they lived at, Mr. Amos. He tells her to think of this as an adventure and the chance for a new beginning, and she tells of she always wanted to be in the "cool kid" group. So that's exactly what she tries to do for most of the book.…
When speaking of obligations, one is also speaking of responsibilities. Characters dodge their obligations because the thrill of being free and having a choice overrules their responsibilities. No one likes to be told what to do or how to do it, yet alone be forced to do it. When the opportunity to be free of worry presents itself, this is when choices become more difficult to choose because nothing is sweeter than adventure and thrill. The characters in “Would Our Two New Lives Include a Third” and “We Real Cool” are in similar situations when speaking of the thirst for adventure, but they handle things a lot differently due to the choices they made in the end.…
In today’s era modernity, we can see hipster culture become popular day by day due to the uniqueness and diversity that attract people in Malaysia and also some of the other country. The definition of the word “Hipster” itself can be defined as “one who has tastes, social mentalities, and suppositions considered cool by the cool” (Lanham, 2003). Hipster culture is a part of subculture. Subculture means “a group of people who share a distinctive set of cultural beliefs and behaviors that differs in some significant way from the larger society” (Kendall, 2008). It shows that people who are follow hipster culture will have a different lifestyle from the dominant culture in their daily life.…
A brick wall of freezing air hits your face as you walk down a seemingly clean and populated part of town. Your pace shifts as the weather on this particular day seems like the coldest in ages and yet you start to warm up as you near the epicenter of a part of town that seems to glow with its radiant warmth. The sidewalks are clean and well maintained; the shops are vibrant and lively with people enjoying the day. As you enter the Metropolis you are only greeted with a harsh and cold flurry of wind on your uncovered face and the ever more obvious colder stares coming from the frigid and dumbfounded people behind them. The stares seem to be the worst thing to bear as the cold stares are freezing your body so you shuffle your all black shoes…
Imagine a place where everywhere you look, you see beauty, everywhere you smell is crisp fresh air. Everywhere surrounding you are ginormous mountains with snow slowly melting and one huge blue body of water. There are trees all over the place, and everywhere you look you see nature and all of God’s creations. This fascinating place is Lake Tahoe, in Nevada. Lake Tahoe is absolutely one of the most gorgeous places I have ever been.…
A universal message that applies to everyone is to be kind and humble to those around you. It is always right to respect others, regardless of whom they are or what they have done. In the essay “Be cool to the Pizza Dude” by Sarah Adams, the thematic message was to be kind and have empathy for those who have it harder than you because you never know what someone is going through. First, Sarah Adams states stay calm and forgive the pizza dude if he cuts you off while you are driving. In the essay, Sarah’s first principal was, “coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in humility and forgiveness, I let him cut me off in traffic…”…
Calvin is a very wise man. Very friendly and was a great president to others. Calvin had two sons named John Coolidge and Calvin Coolidge jr. He had acceded the presidency after the death of Warren Harding. He was then the 30th president of the United States of America.…
Ted uses a lot of imagery in his free verse poem “Depression Glass” by using our five senses: see, touch, taste, feel, and hear. In line one, “It seemed those rose-pink dishes”, seems to be the main focus in this poem while they are used for special occasions, they still have an issue keeping something hot, “the plates like the panes of ice”. He used metaphors twice to compare the rose-pink dishes always being cold as ice and the cups’ inability to keep coffee or other beverages hot, “everyday mug would have kept/a splash hot for the better”. I take this as perhaps a regular mug would have been a better choice, but the hostess realized that it would have just clashed with the rest of the set like an eyesore.…
But, around the united states, southerners say the word "ain't" the most. Yes, this word has been increasing more and more overtime... its used in speech, writing, all genres of music and even spoken from a star baseball pitcher, Dizzy Dean. He once announced "Alot of people who dont say ain't, ain't eatin." So many people use the word "ain't" all over the world, its become so popular, thats why i believe it possibly could be a real word.…
The term “BBoying” was coined by DJ Kool Herc when he described the people dancing to his music as “breakdancing”. This “breaking”, according to Herc, was actually slang for getting excited, or dancing with high energy. BBoys and BGirls would dance during the breaks within songs, and later had competitions where the music was catered to only consist of these breaks. The next characteristic of hip hop that formed in the 70s is also the most popular form today.…

One of the most fascinating aspects of human language is the development of slang: expressions that people take from standard English (or whatever native language) and completely change the meaning of to signify something completely different! These words and phrases are essentially inevitable to encounter when living in a dynamic social society; it’s easy to assume that the vast majority of Americans have heard such words as “cool” when referring to something as interesting, or the phrase “hanging out” used to mean spending time with one another. A few words have come up just over the past five to ten years that sparked my curiosity; my main question being, “What do certain slang words mean to people of different age groups?” While most slang…
The police officer is “very glad the coolie had been killed.” This shows that he uses the death of the coolie to cover up his real purpose of killing the elephant. Though, many Europeans support his decision, the younger men are against him. The younger men consider the elephant to be more worthy than a coolie. The police officer solely kills the elephant to hide his fear and protect his pride.…

Young People in Today’s World Young people today live in a post-modern world and the prevailing cultural context in which they live may be said to be characterised by things such as individualism, materialism, pluralism, secularism, relativism and existentialism. Thus, post-modernity poses a challenge to meta-narratives (overall conceptions of history or society) or ‘stories or beliefs which provide the key to the overall meaning of life’.…
