Ever since I was little, I loved the game of basketball. The speed, intensity, and NBA idols of the game got me hooked. Except the thing I hated most about the game was losing. It was the worst feeling ever, and every time after a loss I’d think to myself what I could’ve done to help us win. Even worse than that was showing sportsmanship to the victor. But the more I played basketball, the more sportsmanship I started to show. Basketball has taught me a simple thing like how to be a good sport.
Not only was basketball teaching me how to act after a game, but teaching me life lessons. I believe that life isn’t fair, and I soon learned that when the referees in the game were making horrible calls. Some losses I made too many mistakes, but the very next day I would go to the gym and try to fix them. I’m trying to get better every day, and the only way to do that is to learn from your mistakes. I’ve also learned to be calm and patient from basketball. I was starting my very first middle school basketball game on A-Team. It was a home opener against Garcia and the expectations were high. When I walked in the gym, I was overwhelmed by the enormous crowd. Throughout the whole game I was nervous, and my confidence lowered every time I had a turnover. We won the game, but I did horrible. The next game coach put me as backup, which gave me a wakeup call. From then on, I was determined not to have another horrible game. I worked harder in practice and pushed myself to the limit.
