Having an African American become the President of the United States was unthinkable for many decades. For a while in American history, African Americans were slaves and it was the law, until the ratification of the thirteenth amendment. For centuries African Americans have fought to be treated equal as whites in all areas of living. They were not treated like people and were treated like property. They were not even aloud to vote for a while and were only counted as three-fifths of a person. For an African American to be president was illegal in the 1960’s, but that all changed in 2008. Osama bin Ladin was the leader of Al Queda, a terrorist group. The terrorist group attacked the World Trade Center in 2001, killing many innocent Americans. After his group attacked on November 11, 2001, Bin Ladin became the most wanted person in the world. Obama then commissioned all branches of the military to hunt, track down, and capture Osama bin Ladin. Many American’s believe this was the most important accomplishment Obama made as president because it helped make Americans start to feel safe again. Hasting’s (2011) stated, “We should all applaud the president and his administration, military, and our intelligence community, for their heroic efforts to capture and kill Osama bin Ladin” (para. 1). American’s also believe the killing helped start to destruct the terrorist group and serve the justice the group deserved. They believe this was a huge effect of Obama being President because Obama made it happen. People felt that justice was deserved and thanked Obama for helping get security back. The first way Barack Obama helped change the views was through his unique characteristics. Obama has many characteristics that the normal stereotypical African American does not have and that began to grab people’s attention. Obama is very intelligent and people began to notice that. Welch and Sigelman (2011) state, “Obama is successful, well educated, and cosmopolitan” (p. 210). Some people believe African Americans are not always as well educated, so for people to see someone as high up made some change their minds. His intelligence and personality made people realize that not all African Americans are like the typical stereotype. Another way Obama helped change views was purely through his ethnicity. Welch and Sigelman (2011) claimed that during Obamas presidency the number of people, both black and white, saying that race relations were good increased remarkably (pg. 208). Through his race it helped people to understand that you do not have to be a certain color to be someone of importance. All people should be treated the same because everyone is special.
