What Does An Athlete Value And What Are Their Priorities?

It is not about creating a plan and paying lip service to it. It is about aligning the athlete’s life with their strengths, passions, short and long-term goals, and prioritizing all aspects of their lives to achieve the goal through self-determination. What does the athlete value and what are their priorities? Do they have what it takes to follow the plan and deal with the multitude of obstacles and setbacks? There are three types of values: values related to how the athlete plays the game (e.g., preparation, attitude, effort, and focus which are “controllables”), team values (e.g., how the athlete functions within the framework of the team), and personal values (e.g., the core of who the athlete is as a person) (Kuehl et al., 2005). …show more content…
“Goal setting is about taking charge of those elements a player can control” (Kuehl et al., 2005, p. 101). “Setting unrealistic or inappropriate goals become a huge burden on confidence” (Kuehl et al., 2005, p. 102).
You have to be mentally tough and resilient. Players must learn to guard against complacency and recognize that there is never a time when the game becomes easy (Kuehl et al., 2005).

Athletes need a high level of commitment and a positive and fully connected focus in order to identify and act on specific daily goals that will take them where they want to go (Orlick, 2016).
The benefits of goal setting
Goals (e.g., well designed ones) promote self-confidence, motivation, and effective performance (Burton & Raedeke, 2008). Goals foster a more positive and cohesive team climate (Burton & Raedeke, 2008).
Goals enhance focus and concentration, boost self-confidence, help us manage stress, create a positive mental attitude, increase intrinsic motivation to excel, improve the quality of practices by making training more challenging, enhance playing skills, techniques, and strategies, and improve overall performance (Burton & Raedeke, 2008, p.
