Why I Want To Be A Social Worker?

Whenever people use to ask me, “why do you want to be a social worker?” I would always reply with, “because I want to help people.” This then lead to the next infamous question, “well, what do social workers do?” and this was a question that stumped me. I always knew social workers were there to help other individuals in need but I never really knew exactly what they did. All people every really know of social workers are their stereotypes. I would constantly get asked, “are you going to be the one to take children away?” No. The next statement, “you must have a good heart because they don’t make any money.” I would think to myself, “well this is encouraging.” But you know what, I know. I know that this job consists of making hard decisions and taking serious …show more content…
During this time my mother was forced to leave with me and my two little sisters with nothing but a few clothes she packed. She had to get out quick because my father was extremely violent and ruthless. We were homeless and we had no money but life was still very kind to us. We were lucky enough to have people let us into their homes and they allowed my mom time to get back on her feet. We were assigned a social worker who not only was incredible to us but also spoke Spanish giving my mother the reassurance that an English speaking social worker might not have been able to give her. We left when it was very close to the holidays and I’m sure one of the biggest feelings of being a failing parent is not being able to give your children the Christmas you feel they deserve. That year we did not go without thanks to the social worker and all the kind donations given to her and their organization. This was when I became inspired to be a social worker but not just any social worker. I want to be another bi-lingual social worker so I can reach out not only to the English speaking community but as well as the Spanish speaking
