The start of week four students continued to take part in group assignments in groups of fives and focus on the civil war studies. Students are curious about the world around them and love to learn why things are the way they are as well as how the Civil War were part of the change. I wanted to promote and establish my social studies instruction on current changes and the students' interests as much as possible. Teachers have more freedom to teach what and how we want in social studies than in another field. Teachers have state standards that students need to master, and there are materials they are required to study. Students participated in group activities they used their classroom textbooks to answer question essential about the Civil War. These question focus was what is a Civil War? Why did it happen in the United States? How did slavery impact the Civil War? What was life in the Northern and Southern states like during this time period? Students also explored building background knowledge by viewing the powerful drawing from the large format picture book “The Middle Passage” by Tom Feelings. The group of six students launched into the study with following question from above as a guide and students added their questions to the list throughout the study and discussion. Teaching with these questions focuses the study on important ideas and issues, not just learning the facts about the Civil War but this time in our history. This was the satisfaction level of the lesson plan students because students really wanted to know and gain a better understanding about our history and the different changes in our history.
