Santiago chooses to be a Shepard because he wants to travel. While having to spend a lot of time with his sheep, he learns from them. “He had discovered the presence of a certain bird meant that a snake was nearby, and that a certain shrub was a sign that there was water in the area. The sheep had taught him that”(Coelho page 20[pdf]). These signs are known as omens that Santiago will learn more about when he meets the king. The boy likes to read his book but learns more from his sheep, “Well, usually I learn more from my sheep than from my books”(Page 2).
