Currently, many environmental regulations exist this is due to the efforts of many activists. As a result of their efforts, there is also more awareness and concern for the environment. What motivates an environmental advocate varies, however, their goal is the same: to ensure that the environment is not destroyed. One of those great environmental advocates is John Muir. John Muir is well known for his activism involving the preservation of National Parks. He truly cared for the environment and therefore strived to protect it from human destruction.
John Muir was born April 21, 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland. Later in his life, his family immigrated to the United States. His family eventually settled in Wisconsin where in Muir’s free time he would observe the wilderness. John Muir, however, decided to become an inventor. This decision only lasted for a while, until he became filled with wanderlust and traveled to various places in the world. His wanderlust eventually led him to California's Sierra Nevada and Yosemite.

His books, articles, and journals promote the uniqueness and magnificence of nature despite difference in time frames between now and then. Muir’s activism helped set a precedent for future National Parks and it gave encouragement to activists. It gave encouragement to activists by demonstrating that their work was not futile because he was able to do a great deal of work by simply detailing nature in his writings and going to congressmen to make his views on the environment
