Knowledge is definitely power and will help you achieve a higher goal both personally and professionally. By taking anesthesia and surgical nursing I have learned an advanced knowledge of surgical anesthesia uses, and different techniques with assisting with surgery. What skills and knowledge have I developed that will increase my opportunity for positions of greater responsibilities in the veterinary profession? How have I advanced my communication skills to be successful and progress in the profession? What critical thinking skills have I developed to be successful and progress in the profession? Can I provide the management and clinical skills to develop leaders who anticipate and adapt to the changing veterinary profession? My semester with anesthesia and surgical nursing had me focus more on pain assessment and analgesia. I got a lot of detailed information about signs of pain both in small animal, large animal and in pocket type pets. Even when an animal is receiving analgesics, they should be still assessed in pain management often. According to Thomas, Lerche & McKelvey (2011), “Pain assessment scores will decrease if analgesic therapy is effective.” Working in a research facility, I have to assess animals daily for signs of pain. By showing the study directors I can recognize and assess pain management they will trust me with this
