How would you define professionalism in your own words? What criteria must be present for nurses to be considered a professional body? Professionalism is the ability to use your skill that you have been trained in to effectively take care of a person. Rather it be the skill of therapeutic communication or a physical skill of inserting a catheter. Skills are also noticed by the character of the person. If there is a patient that is cussing out a nurse, it wouldn’t be very professional for that nurse to do the same. The nurse would have the professionalism to take care of the situation and handle it with the desired results in mind. There are seven essential features of professional nursing that the American Nurses Association has identified from the definition of nursing. The first one is “Provision of a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing.” The second one states, “Attention to the range of human experiences and responses to health and illness within the physical and social environments.” The thirds was states, “Integration of assessment data with knowledge gained from an appreciation of the patient or the group.” The fourth one is the “Application of scientific knowledge to the processes of diagnosis and treatment through the use of judgment and critical thinking.
