Define Success Analysis

At what cost do we define success? Americans have been considered extremely successful for many decades; as a result, the “American dream” has been sought after by many. An attempt to identify all the possible factors and behaviors that have contributed to that success could consume a large quantity of time. Some people may point to the prevalent career centered approach in life as a key to an individual’s ability to succeed. However, I believe that this career centered approach has made us a very robotic and unhappy society; consequently, placing a diminished worth on certain values such as family and other personal relationships. We are becoming a culture that is focused inward on ourselves.

More than 2.5 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States annually with hundreds of deaths related to child abuse reported each year.”
Respect is becoming a word of the past and Love has been replaced with a materialistic approach. What will we do about these issues? Because while abuse is wrong, respect is dying and love is being replaced. I do not believe these are what has diminished our families. These issues I named are only three of many that I believe are only results of our decay, not causes. So why are we culturally decaying? And why are we an unhappy people? To find the answers we must look deeper into what America was built around: faith in God, family, hard work, and bravery: four things that I can see have shaped us

Think about bravery a minute. Harry Truman said “Brave men don 't belong to any one country. I respect bravery wherever I see it.” The reason I have included this quote is because I don’t want my reader to think that Americans are the only brave people. I do not believe this I only believe that bravery helped to shape us. From George Washington crossing the Delaware to Sergeant Alvin York who in World War I received the Medal of Honor for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. Now bravery does not come only at war time bravery can show up anywhere but I believe bravery to be a selfless act that conquers fear and does something we do not see in our everyday life. So now that I have named four characteristics that I believe to have shaped our country. Where have we gone wrong? We are still a monetarily successful nation but our foundation is being eroded. Malcom X said “History is a people’s memory, and without a memory, man is demoted to the lower animals. We have forgotten out history and we have forgotten the things that have shaped this nation. My generation does not know their history. We have become inward focused hoping to get rich quick so that we do not have to work hard. Not realizing that happiness can be found in a hard day’s labor. Bravery is not heard of as much and what was once considered every day is now considered an act of bravery. As Americans we have begun to be demoted to what

The people of the United States of America look to celebrities as role models, but many human beings do not see the great actions of the fallen or living soldiers, or anybody doing a heroic act for this country. America, the home of the brave and free, disregards acts of bravery because we are beyond occupied with the daily news of famous artists and actors. Americans citizens look to movies instead of the news. The United States feels empowered by movies, but it is not common to find that in a soldier. The strongest reason for America 's decline is our current state of politics, which Zakaria titles as “a do-nothing politics”. The idea of a do-nothing politics is described by the belief that American politicians are not actually doing anything because they can 't come to a compromise on simple issues. This state of politics is dramatically affecting our country because if our politicians can 't come to an agreement on any issue, how do we expect to advance? Another reason Americans believe the United States are in a state of decline is because of the idea of the rise of the rest. While I view the rise of the rest as having a positive effect on America, this side of the spectrum views it negatively.…

Booker T. Washington once conveyed, “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed” (BrainyQuote, 2001). There are various ways and numerous extents to which success can be determined. This difference of opinion could be due perhaps to the diversities of cultures and ethnicities or a simple matter of personal perspective. Many Americans today judge their success based solely on tangible attainments, such as how much money they have, what neighborhood they live in, and how many or what kind of car(s) they drive. Others may connect to satisfaction via their social status or even their last name.…
