1. What challenges did this president inherit?
George Washington was challenged with military and western expansion as well as having to set up a whole system of government. Franklin Delano Roosevelt inherited the challenge of dealing with the Great Depression because our economy was in shambles due to the falling stock market. Lyndon Johnson had the challenge of a rapidly growing struggle to restrain Communist encroachment in Vietnam; he had segregation issues to deal with (“Lyndon B. Johnson”). Ronald Reagan had the challenge of improving dealings with the Soviet Union and the need to augment defense spending (“Ronald Reagan”). Although owning slaves, he was against slavery. He abided by the limitations of presidential powers by the creation of a check and balance of the three branches of government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. “On the other hand, Franklin Roosevelt sought through neutrality legislation to keep the United States out of the war in Europe, yet at the same time to strengthen nations in case they were threatened or attacked” (“Franklin D. Roosevelt”). He strengthened presidential powers by forming programs (WPA, CCC, PWA, and TVA) – shutting down banks – all on his own. Lyndon Johnson limited the bombing of North Vietnam to order for negotiations to take place (“Lyndon B. Johnson”). He strengthened presidential powers by sending troops into Vietnam without a declared war by Congress. Ronald Reagan expanded the powers of the presidency by showing he had the power to cut government spending (except for the military which added to the national debt). His policies dealing with international incidents showed no holding back in the way he dealt with foreign governments. Richard Nixon’s decision to resign the office of the presidency after the Watergate scandal points to the reduced power of the Executive Branch of government at the time. He was known as the “Father of our Country.” Franklin Roosevelt was elected for his 4 terms, he got the country out of the Great Depression and supervised World War II. Lyndon Johnson strove to be a successful president as he endeavored to make our country “A Great Society.” He sent troops to Vietnam on the plus side he championed equal rights. Ronald Reagan ranks high as a great achiever as a President of the United States of America. He lowered taxes, push his ideas of Reaganomics as a viable way toward a prosperous economy. He was a contributing factor that saw the end of the Cold War thus possibly saving American lives. Richard Nixon will be remembered for his lying about Watergate break-in which ended with him resigning from the presidency. He improved our relationship with China. One of the great events during his term of office was landing on the moon. Informally, George W. Bush did a great job a calming speech about the hijacked airplanes on September 11, 2001 that destroyed the World Trade Center. He will also be remembered for the war in Iraq.
