There have been many assumptions on what actually caused the Civil War in the United States in 1861. Some believe that the culture differences between the North and South caused the war. Others believe that it was political issues such as tariffs, election of president,or different political parties. Also, people believe that the reform movements during this time could have also caused the war, for example, the temperance movements, women’s rights, and abolition. Thus, making cotton one of the most important of crops in the South and to maintain the cotton they needed all the slaves they could have. It became so important of a crop that some even said “Cotton is king” as referred to in Document D. In Document D, South Carolina Senator James Hammond expressed his opinion on cotton. The cultural differences did lead to the civil war, but it was not the root cause of the war because without Western Expansion, the United States would not have been as exposed and would not have had such drastic differences that would lead to a civil war. The political issues also lead to the war, but again it was not the root cause of the Civil war because if the addition of the new states would have not happened, the political issues would not have been about slavery or how many states would represent in the Senate or even the election of the president because slavery would not in such a demand as it was with the addition of the states. Furthermore, the reform movements did have its effect on the civil war but the not the main cause. The only reform movement that did have a great cause on the war was the abolishment of slavery but again without the growth of the United States, the abolishment would not have been as serious as it was because if the growth would have never happened, the amount of slaves would not have increased as large as it did with the growth.
