Since technology improves living conditions and greatly aids humanity, when society possesses a strong background of scientific knowledge, society flourishes. Citizens become creative, open-minded and innovative, and in these environments, humanity has the opportunity to reach new heights. However, in Ayn Rand’s futuristic novella, Anthem, Equality 7-2521, the protagonist who flees his society after suffering oppression at the hands of his totalitarian government, lives in a technologically primitive society that revolves around the idea that one should place others before themselves. Equality lives in an environment in which science cannot flourish. Anthem’s technologically primitive society implies that an oppressive, change-fearing, narrow-minded…
In his article “How we Listen to Music”, Aaron Copland (1988) states that music is listened to on three different planes. Copland describes them as the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. The reasoning for listening to music for the pure rhythm and harmony is the sensuous plane. The sensuous plane is where “one turns on the radio while doing something else and absent mindedly is engendered by the mere sound and appeal of the music” (Copland). People who apply this plane to their life tend to listen to music as a release.…
The ideals that followed as an outcome of the American Revolution allowed for an attitude of equality for all. Finally winning independence from Great Britain was a historical event that was so relevant to the American identity, and will continue to hold prominence in the rest of human existence. Throughout the American Revolution, the national identity greatly shifted back and forth in order to build off the foundation of freedom. The Founding Fathers thought they were doing just that, but instead they created a nation that favored a small amount of the population; white, property owning males. Establishing a nation that would allow equality for all was the underlying goal within the American Revolution.…

The music album “2112” by the band Rush has many similarities, as well as differences in comparison to Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem. Both stories are set in a dystopian era, where individuality is shameful and the will of their brothers is all that matters. In the two stories, both main characters are curious and open-minded. They each find something new and forbidden. In the novella Anthem, there is no distinctiveness between characters.…
Hence, inequality is nonexistent, due to the absence of cultural groups. Moreover, every human is also equal. Nobody is considered to be the smartest or dullest. Individuals are equipped with certain handicaps so everybody possesses “a [perfectly] average intelligence.” Although no one will have to fight for their place in society like how the totem poles did for first nations in “Totem”, there is a lack of character and diversity among individuals.…
Most of the time when we envision the future we think: new gadgets, new ways of communication, and cars that can fly. Why? The Slavery of Ignorance Slavery is the ability to allow ignorance to take away opportunity created by knowledge.
