In the period during and immediately after the Vietnam War, the United States’ government reached one of its lowest points in terms of popularity and trust amongst the American people. Outraged by the destruction, loss of life, and failure in Vietnam, this shocking defeat and widespread public backlash led U.S. policymakers to recognize that there had been a massive failure in our country’s foreign policy regarding containment. Realizing the U.S. had overextended itself in a country that our government had little knowledge of, policymakers understood the need to reexamine and revise the United States’ strategies of containment. This change would come in 1968 with the election of President Nixon and his subsequent appointment of Henry Kissinger…

This however was not helpful as it caused other nations to have less money to spend on American goods and led them to in turn increase their taxes and tariffs as well.…

Thanks to the rise of big business and the triumph of industry, in the early 1900s, the United States “wielded significant economic power in much of Central and Latin America.” Later on, the U.S. important role in the Great War and the Second World War let most Americans “accept their nation’s leading role in world affairs.” In my opinion, the U.S. involvement in World War II recovered and boosted its economy, whereas its intervention in the Vietnam War exerted a burden on its economy. This comparison shows that costs of maintaining global power weakened the U.S. economy. World War II, to a great extent, cured the Great Depression and led the United States to be a superpower in the world economy.…

Coming into office during the Vietnam War, Nixon was keen to toe the line with respect to his foreign policy decisions. Within the United States, there were factions of the population that were adamant that Communism needed to be stopped in every instance and other factions that demanded an end to a war that was deemed impossible to win. The United States had long followed a policy of refusing to recognize the regime in China, a communist country, as legitimate. In conjunction with Nixon’s efforts with respect to the war in Vietnam, he decided that no more should the United States alienate China. In February of 1972, Nixon became the first United States president to visit China.…

There’s a wave of populism sweeping the globe that appears to have made everyone feel either defiantly jubilant or ready to shit their pants, depending on which side of the ideological aisle they’re on. The most prominent example of this populist wave is Donald J. Trump’s upset win over Hillary Clinton in our recent presidential election, but this is not isolated to the United States. Much of Europe, parts of Asia, and South America, as well, have seen such crusades gain momentum, as people become increasingly frustrated with the perceived negative effects of global trade on their local way of life. As the U.S. party primaries followed by the general election this year went on, many in academia and the media passingly puzzled over populist…
