Kristen Lee talks about the term HAPA and how it defines her multiple cultures. She embraces this term that she learned in college while studying in Hawaii, and she learned to use it a lot when others asked her who she was. (NPR 1.) Kristen Lee uses her HAPA identity to challenge the ignorance of people through her quote stating, “I feel like a society that focuses on black and white does not recognize my unique multicultural experience,” (NPR 1-2,) while avoiding to use her culture to defend her position. By using her HAPA identity as a means to look at problems in society, like how many people ask her what she is based on her looks, Kristen Lee uses her identity which informs the way she views others and the world. This, I suspect, is one of the reasons why I have seen such varied responses to Ferguson in my Asian American circles. I have seen Asian Americans lamenting and protesting; I have seen Asian Americans declaring that no injustice was done; but more often than not, I have seen Asian Americans completely silent.” Liz Lin basically states how being a certain race can affect your views on society, especially being of the Asian American race.
